a girl without a gala

For the first time in over four years,

I find myself with no event to plan…

I love a good party—every aspect of it. From selecting the perfect theme and venue to curating thoughtful moments for guests and donors, I find so much joy in bringing an event to life. There’s something about the art of hospitality—“the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers”—that speaks to my soul.

I’ve watched The First Monday in May, a documentary film that chronicles preparations for the 2015 Met Gala, more times than I can count. Seven Days Out, featuring the reopening of Eleven Madison Park, inspired me to read Will Guidara’s Unreasonable Hospitality (twice) igniting within me a relentless pursuit to provide exceptional user experiences. Hospitality, at its core, is about creating something meaningful—whether it’s a black-tie gala or a beautifully set table for two.

Hospitality, at its core, is about creating something meaningful—whether it’s a black-tie gala or a beautifully set table for two.

After embracing our empty nest and relocating to a cozy downtown Birmingham apartment (with very limited storage space), there’s a slight chance I now happily pay rent for a storage unit lined with shelves of decor, linens, tableware, and platters—just in case I need to throw together an Oscars red carpet viewing party at a moment’s notice.

But now, my tenure as a gala chair has ended. I’ve completed my time serving on boards and foundations. This former mother-of-the-bride, once juggling seating charts and floral arrangements, suddenly finds herself asking: “What is a girl without a gala to do?”

Two years ago, we founded Benevolent for Good with a passion for empowering organizations through event planning and creating impactful experiences. The name Benevolent was intentional—it means "organized for good, well-meaning, and kindly."

Now, this “girl without a gala” realizes that the benevolent spirit extends beyond the ballroom. It’s in the thoughtfully considered details of daily life—the way we welcome house guests, the art of entertaining, the magic of a seamless travel itinerary, and, of course, the meaningful moments of weddings, fundraisers, and galas.

Benevolent for Good: Thoughtful Planning with Purpose

At Benevolent for Good, we believe that the most meaningful experiences—whether a simple gathering or a grand celebration—are shaped by thoughtful planning and intentional details. True to the meaning of benevolent—well-meaning and kindly—we believe every moment can be designed with care, warmth, and purpose.

So while I may no longer have a gala to plan, I have something even more exciting: the opportunity to bring that same passion for hospitality and intentionality to life’s everyday moments and unforgettable celebrations. And that, to me, is just as fabulous.
